Doctoral Project (2004-2006)

  • Abrupt Change Detection in Automatic Disturbance Recognition in Electrical Power Systems

    Supervisor: Dr. Rastko Zivanovic

Synopsis: The aim is to perform automatic event-specific segmentation of the power systems disturbance signals by detecting the abrupt changes in the signal model parameter. Abrupt change detection-based segmentation is the first step towards automatic disturbance recognition, facilitating further feature vector construction and pattern recognition. Different new approaches, algorithms and methods for abrupt change detection are proposed and implemented using Matlab. Major techniques used include the wavelet transform, adaptive wavelets, recursive system identification, adaptive whitening filtering and so forth. Experimentations are done on the real disturbance signals obtained from the digital fault recorders (DFRs) of the power network in South Africa.
